A New Musical Box Museum in Japan
Shigenobu Nagamori is the Chair of Nidec Sankyo and also the Chairman and President of the parent company of Nidec. Sankyo Seiki Mfg. Co. was founded in 1946 and by 1950 they were mass-producing musical movements. In their heyday they accounted for about 90% of the world’s production. Sankyo is in the process of renovating its Lake Suwa Musical Box Museum – Someikan (opened in 1996) in Shimosuwa, it will be re-opened in the middle of March 2016 with the new name, Nidec-Sankyo Memorial Museum of Music Boxes.
Mr Nagamori is planning to invest his own money to open a new museum of musical boxes in Tokyo or Kyoto in 3 year’s time, with the aim of it being the best in the world. He has declared his intention of amassing top-class exhibits for his new museum and to this end has dispatched Nidec employees and independent experts to musical box museums in Europe on a fact-finding mission. Over a three year period he plans to acquire exhibits for his new museum and decide upon a suitable location to attract the maximum number of tourists.
