M.J. Paillard & Co., New York

The firm of Paillard & Co was founded at St Croix, Switzerland in 1814. In 1849 a grandson of the founder, Marius-Justin Paillard, established himself in business in New York as a musical box importer. He returned to Switzerland in 1865, in poor health, having previously taken his nephew, A.E. Paillard into partnership.

M.J. Paillard & Co. exhibited the products of the parent company at the Centennial International Exhibition of 1876, the first official World’s Fair, held in Pennsylvania.

The full article detailing the history of the company and the Paillard family appears in the Summer 2016, Issue 5, of Mechanical Music World. To read this article become a member and receive a copy. Full details on Membership Page
